This was my third time to see Decalco Marie at the Osu Kannon Street Performers festival. It is a highlight of the festival for me, but very difficult to describe. The main performer is a bearded, muscular old man who wears paint on his face, and sometimes dresses in women's clothes and a wig. Other members include two women in similar wigs and attire, and this year he also had a puppeteer as part of the act. One of the puppets looks like Decalco Marie himself, and at some points he does battle with his little stringed doppelganger. There is also a band that plays eclectic live music to go along with the show. The actors dance and contort, and make anguished and ecstatic music. There is definitely a story being told, but I'm never quite sure what it is. Still, the whole scene, along with the music is completely captivating. And, as with all the acts at the Osu Street Festival, it is completely accessible. I sat close enough to touch the actors as they engaged in their surreal performance, occasionally weaving through the crowd and interacting with audience members. You feel like you have entered somebody's dream and are watching it from the inside. Probably video would give a better sense of the experience, but I offer only photos here.
