Gero Onsen 下呂温泉
We took a one night, two day trip to the Gero Onsen hotspring resort area in Gifu, Japan. This whole town is designed around hot springs because of the abundance of natural hot spring water bubbling up. Almost every hotel in the area offers hot spring baths, and there are a number of foot baths here and there where you can soak your feet in the mineral rich waters. There are many artistic touches throughout the town, like wood tiles, colorful manhole covers, and two rivers run through the middle of town. After walking around with my family in the afternoon, I went out again in the evening, and then early the next morning (while my wife and daughter were still sleeping) to see what I could find photographically. The town is a bit run down in some parts, including the hotel we stayed at, but for me that adds to the character. The "Nude Theater" was particularly intriguing to me. What was it like in its heyday? What happens there now? I only had one night in Gero and I don't think that I found the quintessential photo that says, "Gero Onsen!" but hopefully the photos give some sense of the place.
