Tea and Flower Club 茶華道部
Every year I take thousands of photos at the junior high school I work at. All full time teachers at my school should have duties during school events, so these last few years, my school usually gives me the job of photographer. I cover events like the cultural festival, the athletic festival, the handball tournament... This year, they have also asked me to take photos various school clubs and classes for the PTA to use. Mostly I can never share any of these photos because of privacy concerns about showing students faces. I take the photos, edit them, give them to the school, and then never hear about them again. I consider it an existential endeavor, like writing poems on paper boats and floating them down a river. Yesterday, I took photos of the tea ceremony and flower arrangement club. It was my first time to visit the club. It was odd to enter the sparse, peaceful tatami room tucked away in a far corner of the school grounds, while the rest of the school was filled with the sound of bouncing balls, shouting voices and the honking of instruments from the brass band club. I was impressed by the level of detail involved in the tea making process, and how seriously the students took the advice of the Sensei. It was also perfect lighting for photos as the fusuma (papered) sliding doors made a perfect softbox for softening the natural light coming in from outside. I picked out a few of the photos which do not show the students' faces. I would love to share some of the photos I've taken recently of the gymnastics club, an art class, a science class... but you'll just have to use your imagination for those.
